For the first time, Cyperus glaber L. is reported from Spain (Moral de Calatrava, province of Ciudad Real). The plants were previously erroneously ascribed to both Cyperus bellus Kunth and Cyperus rubicundus Vahl. Distinguishing features for these species are compared and some notes on residence status, ecology and habitat of Cyperus glaber in Spain are provided.

AB - The exact identity of non-native, naturalised populations of Cenchrus s.str. in the Mediterranean area has been critically assessed. A herbarium revision confirmed the presence of three species: Cenchrus echinatus, C. longispinus and C. spinifex (syn.: C. incertus). In the present paper C. echinatus is reported for the first time from Spain and confirmed for Egypt and Israel. C. longispinus, up to present widely confused with C. spinifex, is reported for the first time from Croatia, Greece, Israel and Morocco and furthermore confirmed for France (including Corse) and Italy. Finally, C. spinifex is confirmed for France, Italy and Spain, while records from Greece and Israel proved to be in error for C. longispinus. All three species are much alike and widely confused in the studied area. In some areas (especially in parts of Italy and Israel) two species occur sympatrically, which largely added to the confusion. Main features for their distinction are discussed and a dichotomous key for the identification of the native and non-native species of Cenchrus s.str. in the Mediterranean area is presented.

AB - Recent fieldwork and herbarium revisions have considerably improved the taxonomic knowledge of genera Cyperus and Eleocharis (Cyperaceae) in the Iberian Peninsula. In this paper new records are provided for Cyperus aggregatus (2nd record in the province of Huelva, Spain) and C. serotinus (first report from Andalucia). Cyperus croceus and C. retrorsus are reported for the first time from the Iberian Peninsula and, apparently, also from Europe. Previous Spanish records of Cyperus cyperoides turned out to be in error for C. retrorsus. Analogously, the name Cyperus bellus given as naturalized at the Laguna Chica in Moral de Calatrava (Spain) has to be changed to a still unidentiffied species of Cyperus. C. esculentus var. macrostachyus – a distinct American variety – is a naturalized weed of arable land in northeastern Spain. Finally, part of the collections of Eleocharis flavescens from the Iberian Peninsula are in fact proved to belong to E. caduca, a weed from the Old World tropics. Genuine Eleocharis flavescens is here confirmed from Baixo Alentejo (Portugal).

AB - Juncus dichotomus, a native of the Americas, is reported for the first time from Europe. It is more or less widely naturalised in northwestern Italy (provinces of Biella, Novara, Torino and Vercelli) and probably largely overlooked elsewhere as a result of confusion with J. tenuis. Diagnostic features of both species (and other members of the J. tenuis group currently found in Europe, viz. J. anthelatus and J. dudleyi) are critically assessed and an identification key is presented. Taxonomy and nomenclature of J. dichotomus are discussed, especially with regard to the status of J. platyphyllus, and notes on its present distribution in Italy and its ecology are provided. Like J. tenuis, it often grows in valuable natural and seminatural habitats and locally seems to behave like an invasive environmental weed.

AB - Misidentifications are an important but neglected problem in studies on plant invasions. This review shows how taxonomic education of staff and stakeholders is of great importance for correctly assessing threats provoked by alien plant species in field and literature based studies. Four randomly chosen recent examples (Digitaria violascens, Eleocharis pellucida, Juncus dichotomus and Vicia dalmatica) from Europe demonstrate that, as a result of an initial erroneous identification and/or confusion with similar harmless species, potentially noxious environmental weeds have been able to become fully naturalised. They act as “invaders in disguise” and therefore constitute a real problem for conservation management.

AB - Cyperus eragrostis (Cyperaceae): history and current status in Belgium. Cyperus eragrostis Lam., once a rare South American ephemeral alien in Belgium, seems to have recently become naturalised. After recurring records of, often, long-persisting individuals (especially from the 199O's onwards), a large and apparently naturalised colony was discovered in 2002 in Evergem, north of Ghent (province of East-Flanders). The species' history in Belgium is drawn and special attention is paid to recent records. Ecological data (incl. a phytosociological relevé) and original illustrations, based on herbarium specimens, are included.

AB - The South American Paspalum quadrifarium has been reported as a naturalized xenophyte in Tuscany and Liguria, Italy, since at least the 1960s. In the present contribution the discovery of the closely related P. exaltatum, also of South American origin, in Liguria, Italy, is reported. These are the only known occurrences in Europe of both species, which are very similar to each other and likely to be confused. In the present paper their diagnostic features are discussed and original line drawings and SEM photographs for both taxa are presented. Their current distribution in Italy is shown and some ecological remarks are added.

AB - A taxonomic revision of the naturalized representatives of the South American genera Jarava Ruiz & Pav. and Nassella (Trin.) E. Desv. (segregates of Stipa L. s.l.) in Europe revealed several interesting data. Eight taxa are currently regarded as, at least locally, naturalized in the Iberian Peninsula, Macaronesia, France (incl. Corsica) and/or Italy : Jarava ambigua (Speg.) Peñail., J. brachychaeta (Godr.) Peñail., J. caudata (Trin.) Peñail. and J. plumosa (Spreng.) S. W. L. Jacobs & J. Everett, and Nassella neesiana (Trin. & Rupr.) Barkworth, N. poeppigiana (Trin. & Rupr.) Barkworth, N. tenuissima (Trin.) Barkworth and N. trichotoma (Nees) Arechav. Nassella mucronata (Kunth) R. W. Pohl has not been confirmed, all actual European populations being definitely ascribable to the closely related N. neesiana. Particular attention is paid to the confusion of both taxa in Europe and useful diacritic features for their distinction are discussed. Only two taxa have become more or less widespread to date (N. neesiana and N. trichotoma), both being present respectively in all or nearly all investigated countries. Two further taxa (Jarava brachychaeta and J. caudata) also tend to increase. Jarava ambigua (confused with J. brachychaeta in S-France) is cited for the first time as a naturalized alien in Europe. All taxa but Nassella tenuissima (which is an escape from cultivation) are believed to have been introduced unintentionally ; all are of American origin. Each taxon is described and a dichotomous key, original line drawings of all species’ anthecia and further chorological, nomenclatural, taxonomic and ecological data are provided.
