Aurinia

Aurinia Desv.

Aurinia is a genus of 10 to 13 species (compare Mabberley 2008 and Al-Shehbaz 2010), mostly native in Central and southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia. At least five species are cultivated as ornamentals in Europe (Akeroyd 1995) but perhaps only one is widespread in cultivation (Aurinia saxatilis). An additional species, Aurinia petraea (Arduino) Schur, is furthermore locally naturalized in North America (Al-Shehbaz 2010).
Aurinia was long included (as a distinct section) in Alyssum but its independent generic status is no longer debated.
