Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent. (syn.: Morus papyrifera L., Papyrius papyrifera (L.) Kuntze) (E-As.) – Rarely cultivated as a curiosity in Belgium. Recorded in 2005 in Gentbrugge (Gent) at the foot of a wall, at the edge of a former garden. Here, Broussonetia papyrifera obviously is a relic of cultivation and slightly extends as a result of clonal growth. In similar circumstances it was also recorded in Mol. Obviously self-sown individuals are rarely seen. A young individual was recorded in 2009 in De Panne (pavement, no parent plant seen nearby) and in 2018 a spontaneous young shrub was found in the cracks of an old wall (bridge) in Brugge.
Broussonetia papyrifera has been introduced and become naturalized and invasive around the world (e.g. Florece & Coladilla 2006, Malik & Husain 2007, Bosu & al. 2013, Rashid & al. 2014, Chang & al. 2015).
