Chaenostoma

Chaenostoma Benth.

(Sutera Roth s.l.)

Chaenostoma is an African (predominantly South African) genus with 46 species (Kornhall & Bremer 2004). It is a segregate of the genus Sutera. Molecular phylogenetic studies have demonstrated that Sutera was paraphyletic in its traditional circumscription, while its two sections (section Sutera and section Chaenostoma) are monophyletic. To accommodate these findings the genus Chaenostoma was re-established (Kornhall & Bremer 2004, 2005). Sutera in a strict sense only counts three species. From the genus Chaenostoma, one species (C. cordatum) is commonly grown in Europe in gardens, pots and baskets (Gardner 2000, Jäger & al. 2008). It increasingly occurs as an escape.
