As currently understood (Mabberley 2008) Erica is a genus of ca. 860 species. The vast majority is restricted to South Africa. Two species are native in Belgium, Erica cinerea L. and E. tetralix L. (Lambinon & al. 2004). About 20 species are cultivated as ornamentals in Europe (Nelson 1997, De Koning & al. 2000, Roloff & Bärtels 2006, Jäger & al. 2008). Additional interesting information on Erica and related genera is available with The Heather Society at http://www.heathersociety.org.
