Honorius

Honorius Gray

Honorius is a segregate of Ornithogalum L. (see under the latter genus for additional information on the generic boundaries within Ornithogaloideae). Typical features that distinguish it from Ornithogalum s.str. are its perianth that is campanulate at anthesis (vs. stellate), its very shortly pedicelled, pendent flowers (pedicels usually less than 10 mm long) and its filaments that are flattened, almost winged, throughout and lobed at apex. It counts probably four species that are native in eastern Europe and western Asia. At least two of them are cultivated as ornamentals (e.g. Jäger & al. 2008). One of these, Honorius nutans, has been recorded as an escape in Belgium.
