Jasminum

Jasminum L.

Jasminum is an Old World genus of ca. 200 or more species. Most of them are confined to the tropics but some occur in warm-temperate areas as well. China, for instance, counts 43 species (Chang & al. 1996). A single species, Jasminum fruticans L., is native in southern Europe. Several additional species (mostly from southeastern Asia) are cultivated as ornamentals in Europe (e.g. Green 1997).
Jasminum is, in its traditional circumscription, paraphyletic (Wallander & Albert 2000).
Up to present, only one species (Jasminum nudiflorum) has been recorded as an escape in Belgium. An additional species, Jasminum fruticans, is naturalized near Luxemburg, relatively close to the Belgian frontiers (Lambinon & Verloove 2012), and might occur in suitable habitats in southern Belgium as well.
Perfume is extracted from the flowers of some species.
