Rumex thyrsiflorus

12. Rumex thyrsiflorus Fingerh. (syn.: R. acetosa subsp. thyrsiflorus (Fingerh.) Hayek) (C- and E-Eur., N-As.) – A very rare and probably decreasing alien. Known since the 1960’s from a railway track in Sint-Huibrechts-Lille (near Hamont-Achel) and from several other locations in Limburg (Verloove 2002, 2006). Most records are from railway tracks, river banks or more rarely road verges. Since 2011 also discovered in relative abundance on several coal mining heaps near Mons (Flénu, Quaregnon). Doubtlessly locally naturalised and perhaps sometimes overlooked. Much reminiscent of Rumex acetosa and sometimes poorly distinguished.

Residence status of Rumex thyrsiflorus in Belgium (at least of some locations in the valley of river Maas) is somewhat controversial. Records in riparian habitats are considered as native in the Netherlands (van der Meijden 2005).

Rumex thyrsiflorus, Maasmechelen, road verge of motorway E314, July 2008, R. Barendse.

Rumex thyrsiflorus, Flénu, terril Grosse Cotte, coal mining heap, July 2011, F. Verloove
