Smyrnium L.
Smyrnium is a genus with 6-8 species from Europe and the Mediterranean area (Mabberley 2008). Two species are cultivated as ornamentals or as pot herbs, Smyrnium olusatrum L. and S. perfoliatum L. (Richardson 1997). Both readily escape and can become weedy or even invasive. The latter has been recorded in Belgium as well.
Tribe Smyrnieae is maintained as comprising only two genera, Smyrnium L. and Lecokia DC. Analysis of six of the seven species recognized in Smyrnium indicates that the genus is strongly supported as monophyletic (Ajani & al. 2008).
