Revision of Ampelopsis glandulosa from Wed, 2019-02-13 11:27

Ampelopsis glandulosa (Wallich) Momiyama (incl. A. brevipedunculata (Maximowicz) Trautvetter) (E As.) – A very rare escape from cultivation. In 2018 A. glandulosa was seen on two occasions: in the inner court of the former Jardin Botanique in Liège and close to the arboretum in Kalmthout. In both localities it is tempting to think that the species escaped from the collections; however, in Kalmthout it is not included in the official species catalogue and it is not cultivated in the Botanic Garden in Liège neither. The species is dispersed by berry-eating birds and small mammals.

The infraspecific classification of Ampelopsis glandulosa is highly controversial. Five varieties were recognized by Chen & al. (2007). A broad concept of this taxon is followed here. In many horticultural reference works this species is down as A. brevipedunculata (e.g. Richardson 1997, De Koning & al. 2000, Roloff & Bärtels 2006).

Ampelopsis glandulosa has become naturalized and weedy in the eastern United States (Emerine 2011, Moore & Wen 2016).
