Cynosurus

Cynosurus L.

Cynosurus is a small genus of eight to ten species, primarily represented in the Mediterranean region and SW-Asia. One species is native in Belgium, Cynosurus cristatus L. (Lambinon & Verloove 2012).
Cynosurus is the only genus in the Cynosurinae subtribe. Cynosurinae and Parapholiinae are sister taxa (BP = 100%) and form a clade with Dactylidinae (BP = 83–100%) (Saarela & al. 2018).

1 Caespitose perennial. Inflorescence narrowly oblong, up to 14 cm long. Awn of fertile lemma shorter than the lemma. Leaves 0,5-3 mm wide. Ligule ca. 1 mm (native) === Cynosurus cristatus

Annual. Inflorescence ovoid to oblong, rarely exceeding 4 cm. Awn of fertile lemma longer than lemma. Leaves 3-12 mm wide. Ligule 2-4 mm === C. echinatus
