Ephedra saxatilis

2. Ephedra saxatilis (Stapf) Royle var. sikkimensis (Stapf) Florin (syn.: E. gerardiana Stapf var. sikkimensis Stapf) (temp. As.) – An exceptional escape from cultivation. One large male clone persists since several years in coastal dunes in Heist.

This taxon probably is the most widespread in cultivation (see also Yeo 1986). Its taxonomy and nomenclature are very complicated. It is usually accommodated under Ephedra gerardiana, a dwarf shrub (not exceeding 15 cm) of mountain slopes in temperate Asia. The cultivated plants are taller, stout plants and probably better placed under Ephedra saxatilis although the name proposed here should also be considered provisional (comm. H. Freitag).
