8. Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter (syn.: E. abyssinica (Jacq.) Link, E. pilosa (L.) Beauv. subsp. abyssinica (Jacq.) Aschers. et Graebn.) (Afr., temp. As.) – A very rare and always ephemeral alien. Recorded in 1939 as a wool alien in the Vesdre valley. In more recent times seen in port-areas in Antwerpen (1997) and Gent (2003) without obvious vector of introduction. In 2011 recorded in two former clay pits (Kortrijk and Roeselare), twice obviously from discarded birdseed wastes.
Eragrostis tef is cultivated in parts of Africa as a minor cereal crop. Its seeds – like those of Eleusine africana subsp. coracana – are also included in birdseed mixtures, which might explain previous occurrences as an alien in Belgium (see also Hanson & Mason 1985).
