Pimpinella

Pimpinella L.

Pimpinella is a genus of ca. 150-200 Eurasian and African species. Two species are locally rather common native species in Belgium: Pimpinella major (L.) Huds. and P. saxifraga L. (Lambinon & Verloove 2012).

In its traditional circumscription Pimpinella is resolved as non-monophyletic (Wang & al. 2014, Fernández Prieto & al. 2018).

1       Ovary and fruit hairy. Annuals or biennials === 2

Ovary and fruit glabrous. Perennials (native) === Pimpinella major and P. saxifraga

2       Annual. Rays subequal, 2-15. Fruit ca. 3-5 mm long, with short, appressed hairs. Young inflorescences erect === Pimpinella anisum

Biennial. Rays very unequal, usually more than 15 (up to 50). Fruit ca. 2 mm long, with long patent hairs. Young inflorescences nodding === P. peregrina
