Corispermum pallasii
2. Corispermum pallasii Steven (syn.: C. leptopterum (Aschers.) Iljin, C. hyssopifolium var. leptopterum Aschers., C. sibiricum Iljin subsp. baicalense Iljin) (Siberia, N-Am.?) – A locally commonly naturalised alien. Apparently first recorded in Gent in 1917 along a railway track but probably only ephemeral. The naturalisation history of Corispermum pallasii in Belgium started in 1924 in Oostende. It was introduced through the port and immediately expanded to the surrounding coastal dunes (initially at Oostende but soon also to Bredene and Lombardzijde, Middelkerke and Westende). From 1929 onwards also known from inland locations around Antwerpen (sand raised sites): at first in the port-area near Ekeren (Wilmarsdonk) and soon spreading to suitable sandy habitats in Hoboken, Austruweel and Sint-Anna. Already very abundant (and probably naturalised) around 1942. At present, Corispermum pallasii has further extended its Belgian distribution. It is now abundant in most coastal dunes (ruderalised sites) and in large sand raised sites around Antwerpen and Gent. Elsewhere it is a regular but usually ephemeral alien: along railway tracks, in disused railway yards, at sand deposits,… So far, Corispermum pallasii has only been exceptionally recorded in Wallonia (for instance near a sand deposit in Huy in 2010 and near Doische in 2013).
Immature fruits of Corispermum pallasii usually have a broad, translucent, more or less slightly erose wing, a character of the closely related (and sometimes considered conspecific) C. intermedium. However, with age this wing is becoming narrower, opaque and entire in Corispermum pallasii (Verloove & Lambinon 2008).
Corispermum pallasii was long known as C. leptopterum in Belgium. Mosyakin (1995, 2003) pointed out that the plants here concerned should be referred to as Corispermum pallasii.
