Sida rhombifolia
Sida rhombifolia L. (trop.) – A locally common but ephemeral soybean alien, seen each year in abundance in the port of Gent since 1993 (Verloove & Vandenberghe 1995). Seedlings occur each year in abundance but mature plants are seldom seen. Rather rarely seen in other port-areas (Antwerpen, Izegem, Roeselare), always associated with grain importation. Recently also found as a weed in lily fields in the Netherlands (Holverda & al. 2009, Reijerse & Verrijdt 2010).
Sida rhombifolia is one of the most typical soybean aliens in Belgium. In the absence of flowers and fruits, Sida rhombifolia is easily distinguished from S. spinosa by its typical rhomboid leaves that are narrowed at base (cordate in the latter).
Sida rhombifolia is a rather variable species (Ugborogho 1980, Sivarajan & Pradeep 1994). Belgian collections apparently fit well with Sida rhombifolia s.str.
